On Tuesday, Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen, who is one of the leading candidates for the state’s next lieutenant governor, received the endorsement of former Alabama Crimson Tide football coach Gene Stallings.

Allen is slated to face former Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) chairman John Wahl on June 16 in a runoff election for the party’s pick in the November general election.

Stallings is well-known as the head coach at the University of Alabama (UA) from 1990 to 1996, leading the team to a national championship in 1993. His endorsement of Allen sprang from Allen’s time playing under Stallings while he attended the university.

“Wes Allen played WR for me at Alabama and I have stayed in touch with him in the decades since,” Stallings said. “Wes Allen is a fine, Christian, honest man who has proven himself to be a leader who gets results for the people of Alabama. Wes has my full support and I encourage all of my friends in Alabama to get out on June 16 and vote to elect Wes Allen as Lt. Governor.”

Allen expressed gratitude for his former coach’s endorsement, recalling fondly the lessons learned under him during Allen’s college years.

“There are few people that have made an impact on the lives of as many men as Coach Gene Stallings,” Allen stated. “He taught me a great deal about discipline, determination and leadership. The faith he has put in me with this endorsement is incredibly meaningful and humbling.”
